H igh refresh rate monitors require the correct cables and setup to work at their full refresh rate and resolution. VGA cables support a maximum of 75Hz at 1920x1080. The more common Dual-Link DVI and HDMI 1.4 cables can support 144Hz at 192x1080, or 75Hz at 2560x1440; HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.3,however, support 240Hz at 1080p, 144Hz at 1440p and 60Hz at 4k. HDMI 2.1 supports the latest 4k 144Hz displays, but this port is unsupported on current graphics cards. Consequently, if you want to support a 2560x1440 or 3860x2560 (or other wide screen resolutions) at a high refresh rates today, the only cable you can use is DisplayPort 1.4.
